Egg Yolk Tellurite Emulsion is used as supplement in nutrient agars for detection of lecithinase activity and concurrent tellurite reduction in microbial colonies. Hence, Staphylococcus aureus may be identified by the dark grey to black staining of the colonies due to tellurite reduction, accompanied by lecithinase-caused formation of light, sometimes whitish halos surrounding the colonies.
