They are therefore an essential component of wastewater analysis and for industrial and indirect dischargers.

The most important sum parameters include chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), total organic carbon (TOC), total inorganic carbon (TIC), adsorbable organically bound halogens (AOX), total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorous (TP). The established values are used for purposes including analysing biological and chemical pollutants as well as monitoring treatment and purification processes.
