Le TCEP est utilisé, en biochimie, pour la réduction ménagée des protéines. Il convient très bien en remplacement du β-mercaptoéthanol, avant l’électrophorèse SDS, pour la réduction des ponts disulfure des protéines. Malgré l'efficacité et la rapidité (en quelques minutes) de la réduction, le TCEP n’attaque ni les autres liaisons ni les groupements fonctionnels des protéines. Le TCEP est non volatile, inodore et non oxydable par l’oxygène atmosphérique.
