Sodium ethylmercurithiosalicylate, also known as thimerosal, is primarily used as a preservative in various products such as vaccines, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic solutions. For the specific detection of thiomersal down to low mg/l levels, electrochemical methods like voltammetry and polarography offer a cost-effective and reliable alternative to more expensive spectrometric techniques such as ICP-MS or AAS. These methods enable precise analysis of thiomersal without interference from other components and feature low acquisition and operational costs. As complex sample preparation is not required, vaccines and pharmaceutical solutions can be directly analyzed for their thiomersal content.
