General information
Secondary antibodies do not bind directly to the target molecule, but rather to the primary antibody. They are usually coupled with enzymes or fluorescent dyes so that the binding of the primary antibody can be made visible or measurable. In research, they serve as signal amplifiers and enable more sensitive detection, as several secondary antibodies can bind to one primary antibody. This makes them important tools in methods such as ELISA, Western blot or microscopy.
Primary antibodies are proteins that bind specifically to a particular antigen, i.e. a target molecule such as a protein or a structure within a cell. They are used in research to visualise specific molecules, isolate them or investigate their function. Typical applications include Western blotting, immunohistochemistry and flow cytometry. Due to their high specificity, primary antibodies enable the precise detection of biological processes.
