Human platelet lysate (HPL) is increasingly used as a functional substitute for fetal bovine serum (FBS) in cell culture. Compared with FBS, HPL offers several key advantages: it is free of animal-derived components, exhibits significantly lower batch-to-batch variability, and thereby contributes to improved reproducibility. It also demonstrates high efficacy and performance relative to FBS. Due to its human origin, HPL further supports the clinical translatability of experimental results.

Human platelet lysate (HPL) is increasingly used as a functional substitute for fetal bovine serum (FBS) in cell culture. Compared with FBS, HPL offers several key advantages: it is free of animal-derived components, exhibits significantly lower batch-to-batch variability, and thereby contributes to improved reproducibility. It also demonstrates high efficacy and performance relative to FBS. Due to its human origin, HPL further supports the clinical translatability of experimental results.


It is a growth factor-rich supplement obtained through an upcycling process from platelet units that are no longer suitable for transfusion, collected at blood donation centers. The stored growth factors are released through freeze-thaw cycles and processed in GMP-certified facilities.

Directions for use

Numerous studies have shown that HPL not only achieves comparable but in some cases even better results than FBS. In particular, the proliferation rate of mesenchymal stem cells is increased while their differentiation potential is maintained. Additionally, a lower supplement concentration is usually sufficient to establish stable growth conditions, making cultivation more efficient and cost-effective.

HPL ELAREM™ Perform-FD PLUS Research Grade, fibrinogen-depleted, EU origin

ELAREM™ Perform-FD PLUS Research Grade is a fibrinogen-depleted and anticoagulant-free Human Platelet Lysate of EU origin. As a xeno-free and easy-to-use cell culture supplement, ELAREM™ Perform-FD PLUS Research Grade supports the efficient and safe in vitro expansion of various primary cells and cell lines.


Application

Due to a unique fibrinogen-depletion technique, ELAREM™ Perform-FD PLUS is a clot-free and anticoagulant-free Human Platelet Lysate. The product neither requires the addition of anticoagulants in cell culture nor during manufacturing. That makes ELAREM™ Perform-FD PLUS a ready-to-use Human Platelet Lysate that is widely applicable, since the absence of anticoagulants offers even more convenient cell growth conditions.

Final concentration of ELAREM™ Human Platelet Lysate in cell culture medium can vary depending on cell type and experimental conditions. It is recommended to determine the optimal concentration – between 1% and 10% (v/v) – for the cells of interest.


ELAREM™ Perform-FD PLUS is manufactured under an ISO 9001:2015 certified Quality Management System. Each batch is produced from large pools of platelet units. That ensures batch-to-batch consistency and enables reproducible conditions. ELAREM™ Perform-FD PLUS is manufactured from platelet units obtained from healthy blood donors at licensed blood centres in the EU.

Technical Information
Instructions for use, addition Thaw in a water bath at +37 °C. Homogenize by gentle swirling.
Preparation of aliquots is recommended to avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles.
