For many years, Carl ROTH and the German Chemical Society have been jointly supporting young scientists with an award for outstanding basic research. For ten young chemists, this serves as a springboard as they embark on their careers.

Each spring, at the annual conference of the German Chemical Society (GDCh), there is a ceremonial presentation, dedicated to young talent in the chemical industry and in modern basic research. That’s because, since 2014, Carl ROTH has been presenting the Carl ROTH Young Talent Award to young scientists here each year.

The award is open to all young researchers in chemical sciences, whose graduation (bachelor or masters) was less than five years ago. Applications from technical colleges, universities and research institutes are welcome, as well as applications from the young scientists themselves. The total prize fund of EUR 8,000 is awarded for special services to the fields of resource-saving synthesis methods and innovative chemical applications. Sustainability is an increasingly important aspect in evaluating the applications – no easy task given the high quality of the work submitted. A top-class committee from Carl ROTH and the GDCh evaluates the applications received and jointly decides on the award winner. Experienced chemists, often with professorships at the Karlsruhe Institute for Technology, play a leading role in the jury. Carl ROTH is represented by its managing director.

For André Houdelet, Managing Director of Carl ROTH, the Young Talent Award is extremely important: “Every year we look forward to the submitted topics with eager anticipation – and every year we are impressed by the quality and creative, investigative spirit that radiates from them. This means that, in each of the past years, the expert jury was only able to reach its decision after lengthy discussions. As a company, we at Carl ROTH are filled with joy and pride to be able to support talented young scientists with this Young Talent Award.”
